After years of leading and coaching in schools, I was frustrated by the resistance and couldn’t figure out why nothing was really changing.

When teachers pushed back, didn’t follow through, or things just weren’t improving, I took it as a sign that I needed to step in stronger. So I did what I knew how to do. I modeled, added accountability, clarified expectations, and followed up.

I was working hard, but nothing was really improving. Things would look good in the moment, but not much was actually changing in practice. I kept thinking, What am I missing?

That’s when it clicked.

Resistance wasn’t something to push through or manage better. It was something to understand. What I was seeing wasn't defiance. It was protection. People were protecting something that felt at risk, like their time, their confidence, or their ability to succeed.

I realized the next step wasn't to find more strategies. I needed to understand what was causing the resistance.
